The performance “The glass”, based on the short story “The glass” by Ivo Andrić, will be performed on Tuesday, August 18, at 9 pm, in the House of the Nobel laureate Ivo Andrić.

From Andrić’s experience living with Bosnian friars in Ovčarev near Travnik and Zenica during the First World War, a literary and artistic reflection on the Franciscans of Bosnia Srebrena, a narrative and novelistic opus with Bosnian friars as the main literary characters, was born. Some stories, popularly called Andrić’s friar or Franciscan cycle, take place in old friar monasteries in Central Bosnia.

The glass is a short story set in the monastery of St. Franje in Guča Gora.

Friar Petar and Friar Nikola Granić, known as Mumin, present the author’s view on two major topics: Bosnia and emigration.

In Moomin’s monologue, Andrić summarized the most succinct literary image of Bosnia, a kind of author’s manifesto about the country of his origin and literary preferences.

In this short story, Andrić examines the constant question of leaving or staying in Bosnia during the time he spends in emigration. The glass was published in 1940, when Andrić was in Berlin serving as Minister Plenipotentiary and Extraordinary Envoy of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in Nazi Germany.

The play premiered in Guča Gora, Travnik, in 2025.
