The phone is ringing. I pick up the phone. Dusan.
I made plans with Dušan to do The Professional, Claustophobic Comedy and Larry Thompson, but everything fell through. There was no money for culture, like every year. We did not record time or us with the film.
Teatar zvezda gave me the theatrical hit Mala, the intuitive drama of our tragedy The Life of Jovan, the tragedy of neocolonialism in Eastern Europe, The Ship of Love, and the global installation of an intellectual in the media attraction Public Personality. Provocation through theater…
Thirty years later the phone rings again. Dušan…I’m driving to the airport, I activate my mobile phone with my other hand. New show!
For these three decades, it seems that good people from our neighborhood have disappeared. Bata, Dacha, Misha, Žarko, Seka, Sofi… Three decades. Eighties our Claustophobic comedy, today the comedy of our claustrophobia. Has everything really changed that much? And has it really been that long? And did I really love the theater…?
Dušan Kovačević
I wrote a claustrophobic comedy thirty years ago. I wrote it with the feeling that we live in an anxiety that is masked by the occasional opening of the window. Leaving that house of our anguish – the homeland, to the countries of “freedom” – most often to Italy, was the feeling of going on a weekend of prisoners sentenced to life in a comfortable prison and under the watchful eye of “one of the best European police”.
A man can be stuck in an elevator as well as in the state, says Sava Ozačar in the role of the working poor and the dark-skinned Othello – a man in love with a life that is unattainable for him.
The subtitle of this bitter comedy could also be the title: Theater prompts life. That is the correct and I guess the only honest side of hinting as a desire for the truth.
