On the occasion of April 22, International Earth Day, Mountaineering Club “Subra” and the Agency for Development and Protection of Orjen – manager of the Orjen Nature Park, are organizing on Sunday, April 19, at the Orjen Saddle, an educational and entertaining event “Spring in the Snow”.

“It will be an opportunity for the participants to spend a day in the great snow, only 25 km from the sea, hiking on the white blanket, learning about a number of interesting things from the past and hearing possible variants of predicting the future of Orjen and its snows, and tasting snow delicacies in the unreal ambience of the Orjensko sedlo pass, located in the heart of the massif, at an altitude of 1,600 m. In this location, spring snow is still a regular occurrence, but climate change is also beginning that’s where we feel more and more,” emphasized the Agency for Development and Protection of Orjen.

The organizers invite you to enjoy the mountain, but also to contribute to spreading awareness about the local consequences of this global phenomenon and to think about the possibilities of our adaptation, as well as the adaptation of the nature of Orjen itself!

You need to have:

– Transportation to the starting point at your own expense

– Backpack with food and spare goods

– Snow boots and ankle boots

– Protective sun cream

– Poles (optional, but very useful for snow)

Program for the celebration of the International Earth Day at Orjensko sedlo, April 19:

– Organized departure from the elbow bend at Donji spomenica at 9 a.m., on the road Vrbanj-Orjensko sedlo

– Along the way, talk about the altitude zones of vegetation, their adaptation to heavy snow, and talk about the snow limit

– Arrival around 10 a.m. at Orjensko sedlo, snacks and tea

-10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., division of participants into 3 groups:

-Discussion of climate change in Orjen and the possibilities of adaptation

– Determining on the ground snow thickness, type, color, structure, degree of danger from avalanches, etc.

-Presentation of historical data on Orjen snows, and the possibilities of dendrochronology in determining the paleo-climate

-11-12:30, tour of the terrain in one or more groups, depending on the readiness of the participants and the current conditions (tour to Kosmaš, Crljena greda, or at least the Snow Cave)

-1:00 p.m.: lunch (from a rucksack), with mulled wine tasting and snow-based delicacies

2-3 pm: free time, exchange of opinions, feasting…

-3-4pm: return to the Lower Monument

The organizers ask the participants to send the best photos (to the same Viber number from the registration) after the event for social networks, but also to select the best ones for the accompanying exhibition as part of Subra’s traditional manifestation “Orjenska 3jada”, planned for the end of May!
